Saying “Sorry” to someone is always a humbling experience. When you do it, pride is stubborn and forced to step aside. I know. I know. Having to admit you’re wrong makes you feel like you have that proverbial tail between your legs. But, without that word, silent treatments abound, grudges are fortified and sometimes years go by when someone fails to say they’re sorry and the receiving party refuses to forgive.

Abiah encapsulates the need to apologize to our offended loved ones or unloved ones in his new single Sorry.  And what makes asking for forgiveness harder, is apologizing when every bone in your body knows or feels that you’re right. Abiah strikes that nerve.  

With the warm analog sound of the Grand piano reminiscent of John Lennon’s sound on Imagine and a hint of Church hymnal flavor, Abiah's vocals pour onto the melody with delicacy, and then you know you're in for something...sweet. “Sweet” is the word that comes to mind when I hear this tune. You can hear the rasp in his falsetto, indicative of the engineer's wise choice to allow Abiah's voice to take center stage with the accompanying organic chords that take you for short stroll in name-your-choice-of-scene-here.

It is a very simple message that could have very well been canonized in the book of Proverbs. 

Sorry.

 

No matter who's right or wrong.

Cause when you say 'sorry', it's the word that rights the wrong...

 

No one is innocent.

Simple, true and speaks to every human's soul no matter your faith or cultural background. Even the director of Abiah's video remained faithful to the simplistic composition of the song by having plain pastel backgrounds behind several headshot angles of Abiah. Captions next to him read “Sorry” in several different languages. This was also done by Madonna with a song of the same title, but we’re talking about two totally different styles and approaches on the topic.

At just below 3 minutes, Abiah was wise to keep it short. I mean, how long can a song about saying “Sorry” be? And after a few listens, the lyrics remain memorable which is a marker to good songwriting and composition. I’m curious to hear more, but if you’re as intrigued as I am, “Sorry” is a good song to start with.
