Fatal Stabbing at a Miami-Dade High School
September 16, 2009By Chrisnatha Derosier

On September 15, a fight between two male students at Coral Gables Senior High School resulted in a fatal stabbing. The suspect was taken into custody.

The victim has been identified as Juan Carlos Rivera, 17. Rivera was stabbed in the chest and died shortly after in the school's courtyard. The name of the student taken into custody has not yet been released.

"I think we need to understand that whether it's Liberty City, Opa-Locka or Coral Gables, children are responding to everyday stressful situations in very negative ways…Random acts of violence like the one we saw here today are almost not preventable," said Alberto Carvalho, Superintendent for Miami-Dade Public Schools.

Coral Gables High School, home to the International Baccalaureate magnet program in South Miami-Dade, was quarantined after the incident.
