Confessions of a 20 Something: Where the Wild Things Are
September 29, 2009By Ana Guthrie

I'm not trying to sound like the Hip-Hop obsessed character (Sid) that Sanaa Lathan played in Brown Sugar, but...

The children's book, Where the Wild Things Are, is probably the reason why I fell in love with literature.

Okay, okay...so maybe I say that about a lot of books. But you get my drift, eh?

I'm so thrilled that there's now a movie adaption that hits theatres on October 16.

Penned by Maurice Sendak in 1963, this classic is treasured for what it does and does not say. It's a story about a boy's passion and imagination.

Where the Wild Things Are introduces us to Max who goofs around at home in a wolf costume one evening. Max's mom sends him to bed without dinner after he growls at her and chases their dog with a fork. While in his room, a mystical, enchanting forest begins blossoming out of Max's imagination. The Land of the Wild Things springs forth.

Max fights and conquers all of the furry, growling monsters that roam in this land. Before long, Max is appointed King of the Wild Things. Eventually, though, Max fiends for home and decides to leave the kingdom. He treks back and, upon reaching his bedroom, finds his supper waiting for him, still hot.

So that's the story on the surface.

But, I love Where the Wild Things Are for its invisible tale of creating and exploring. Although rambunctious, Max reminds us of our tender, fanciful days. If you're anything like me, "life" has a way of making you serious and sober as the years go by. I suppose it's what they call "maturing."

Yet, there's a Max in all of us...

a Max who's waiting to publish that book

a Max who's yearning to join the Peace Corps

a Max who's desiring to launch that home-based business

a Max who's hungry to unveil that clothing line

a Max who's longing to live a zany life

And there's a God within all of us, too.

He'll make our lives fulfilling and thriving. We just have to answer the Holy Spirit's prompting to walk with Him. Once we accept His invitation (folks, it's the best free gift out there), your life will be anything but dull. It won't be peechy keen, but, if you're plugged in and serving God, you're guaranteed to encounter adventures.

Don't take my word for it. (Channeling Reading Rainbow, friends. Oh, don't act like you don't remember Levar Burton) Just check God's promises:

John 10:10 "I [Christ] came that [you] may have life, and that [you] may have it more abundantly."

Psalm 16:11 "[He] will show [you] the path of life: in [God's] presence is fullness of joy; at [His] right hand there are pleasures for ever more."

Psalm 139:11 "[You] are fearfully and wonderfully made."

Deuteronomy 28:13 "...the Lord will make you the head, and not the tail; and you will be above only, and you not beneath; if you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day, to observe and to do them"

1 Corinthians 2:9 "But as it is written, "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined the things that God has prepared for those who love him."

Are you ready to lay aside your cozy, comfortable or routine life? Then, surrender it to Jesus. He'll add some extra to your ordinary.

With Christ, you'll truly go where the wild things are.
