I'm Going As An Illegal Alien!
October 27, 2009By Tiffani Knowles

This Halloween, ghouls, ghosts and goblins are nowhere near as reprehensible as a single costume that was stripped from websites and store shelves to pacify activist groups.

A new costume picked up by stores like Target and Walgreens - steeped in satire - "the illegal alien," was designed and manufactured by Forum Novelties, Inc., a company based in Melville, NY.

The costume includes an orange jumpsuit similar to prison garb, with "ILLEGAL ALIEN" stamped across the chest, a "green card" and a space alien mask. It was priced at $27.49 to $39.99.

Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, wrote e-mails to Minneapolis-based Target and Wisconsin-based BuySeasons, Inc. calling the costume "distasteful, mean-spirited, and ignorant of social stigmas and current debate on immigration reform."

While the costume was only offered on their websites and not in the store, both Target and Walgreens halted all sales from the product and pulled it from the web catalogs.

"It was never our intent to offend the consumers with the products we offer," Target said in a statement to the NY Post.
