Indian Woman Fined for Defaming Husband
August 4, 2010 • By Sarah Richardson
An Indian court fined a woman who cited her husband's sexual impotence as grounds for divorce last week.
A judge in central Madhya Pradesh state ordered Vandana Gurjar to pay 200,000 rupees ($US4,000) to her estranged husband Hemant Chhalotre.
Chhalotre complained that her impotence comment rendered him unfit for further marriage and defamed his manhood.
Gurjar complained to a court that after 3 months of marriage she "could not have conjugal bliss with Chhalotre" and therefore the divorce was granted.
The fine that Gurjar must pay back exceeds the annual income of millions living in India.
