Kid Can't Sell Lemonade Without a License
August 13, 2010By Sarah Richardson

Last week at a local arts fair in Oregon, a 7-year-old's lemonade stand was closed down by a county inspector.

Julie Murphy and her mother Maria Fife were selling lemonade at the fair when a county inspector asked to see their restaurant license.

They were told that if they did not stop selling lemonade they would be fined $500. They packed up their stand as Julie left crying.

Jeff Cogen, chairman of Multnomah County, says that health inspectors were just following the rule book and apologized to Julie and her mother Marie.

Cogen went on to say that he does not want to be in the business of shutting down the iconic American kid thing-to-do-- a lemonade stand.

Julie accepted and appreciated the apology, but did not say whether she would continue selling lemonade.
