Natural Hairnnamix: Fall Haircare Tips
October 3, 2012By Rossette Allen

Hey Newd Magazine friends! My name is Rossette Allen, affectionately known as Candie. It is my pleasure to share a little bit of my passion with you in my new column here at NEWD: "Candie's Natural Hairnamix." I am a natural hair blogger and vlogger and it is my desire to utilize these tools afforded me to be a blessing to others.

In a nutshell, it is my medium for showcasing the "dynamix" of natural hair. Join me on this journey as we embrace our "roots" and explore the wonderful world of "naturality."

Okay, so fall is officially here and, for almost everyone, there will be or already is some noticeable change in the weather. With this change of weather comes the need for a change in the way you care for your oh-so-lovely head of hair.

During the fall season, there is usually less moisture in the air and cold winds tend to cause tangles and lead to dry brittle hair. Steps should be taken to prevent damage and preserve the health of your hair.

Below are eight hair care tips to help keep your hair in tip top shape during this season:

1. Deep Condition Regularly - Deep conditioning once a week for at least 10 minutes will help to rid hair of dryness.

2. Shampoo Less....Condition More - Trading in your shampoos for conditioners may help to keep hair from drying out. Shampoos tend to be drying to the hair, and as such, it may not be advisable to apply them very often. Try doing more Co-Washes (Conditioner-Washes) as they are very moisturizing to the hair.

3. Use Leave-In Conditioner - Use a leave-in conditioner to help restore moisture and keep your hair from frizzing.

4. Hot Oil Treatments - Doing bi-monthly hot oil treatments will be well worth it. It will leave your hair soft, silky and shiny.

5. The Good Ol' H2O - Water is an excellent source of moisture for natural hair. Spritz hair with water every other day to keep it soft and moisturized.

6. Minimize Wash-n-Go Styles - Wearing Wash-n-gos when the weather is cold can cause your hair to dry out. Leaving home with damp or wet hair is not a good idea. Not only do you run the risk of catching a cold but you increase your chances of experiencing unwanted breakage.

7. Wear Protective Styles - Fall is a perfect time to start wearing protective styles. The ends of the hair are the oldest and most fragile part of the hair. It is the most vulnerable part and the most susceptible to breakage. It is therefore advisable to wear your hair in styles that keeps your ends tucked away and protected. Some popular protective styles are French rolls, two strand twists, braids, etc.

8. Jazz Up With Trendy Accessories - Hair accessories like scarves or hats are a cool way to protect your hair from the potentially damaging effects of the wind.

Fall is indeed one of the most beautiful seasons of the year. Enjoy it to the fullest while maintaining a beautiful you.
