What if we had a law
that sanctioned the kidnapping of foreigners and forced them to work for free
under overwhelmingly ruthless, abusive conditions? We did, it was called
slavery.
What if we had a law that legalized murder and nobody blinked an eye about it? Well, we do. It's called abortion.
Slavery was abolished and is NO LONGER supported by the law of the U.S. land. Society, as a whole, agrees that slavery, in the Western sense, is evil. Many, including me, find it despicable and would never want to bring back those American nightmares. The majority does not think slavery is O.K. (except for the depraved underworld of human traffickers).
Abortion, on the
other hand, is legal. Tens of millions of unborn children since Roe vs. Wade
have had their skulls crushed, cut into pieces and burned to death by saline
solutions and there is no outcry that is reaching the halls of the Supreme court.
Society, as a whole, is O.K. with this. It's normal now.
Now the Supreme Court is on the verge of opening the flood-gates to same-sex marriages.
Get the picture? Are
we having fun yet?
Let's get this clear. I love gay people. There are close people in my life who are gay or struggle with homosexuality and I would most likely take a bullet for them. I say "most likely" because I have to think long and hard about a bullet. There's very few, including my wife, who I would die for but I'll take a bullet in the buttocks (cue the Forrest Gump movie)! More importantly, GOD loves gay people. He loved them so much that He gave His unique, one and only Son to die for them. That's how much He loves them.
So this is not about hatred, discrimination, or homophobia. (Never liked that term; who's afraid of gay people?)
This, to me, is about the inevitable. The first MAJOR domino to start the elaborate set-up that awaits to fall across the maze. The first domino came in the form of a woman called Edith Windsor, a New York widow whose long-term partner and spouse died. Because of her spouse's death and the legalities that entailed, Windsor was slapped with a $363,000 federal estate tax because the Federal government doesn't recognize her marriage to another female. Naturally, like anybody about to lose $363,000, she took it to court. I understand her plight, nobody wants to lose that kind of money, especially when you believe in all sincerity that you are a spouse ENTITLED to the same rights as others. But this is not about Edith Windsor either. She's just the first domino in this hot topic.
In 1996, when DOMA
(Defense of Marriage Act) was put into law, there were no states that legalized
same-sex marriages. Now nine states and Washington D.C. allow gay and lesbian
marriages. Barack Obama is the first sitting president publicly give it a
thumbs up and that has the tide turning for the LGBT (Lesbian,Gay, Bi-sexual,Transgender)
nation. Now the Supreme Court is involved and whatever they decide becomes the
law of the land. Period. Finito. So if the Justices agree in unison to overturn
DOMA, many same-sex marriages will get the rights they sought but there's an
undercurrent below all the rainbow flags that wave against DOMA that is of more
concern.
The undercurrent is the inevitable. Romans 1:18-32 illustrates this. God made the truth plain for all. Truth is rejected and replaced with lies. Lies are then promoted and the truth suppressed. Society gradually, for centuries, removes every truth of God and normalizes immorality. Wrong becomes right. So when the law of the land starts to demand that Pastors and other clergyman acknowledge and wed same-sex couples in the name of tolerance and equality, what will the government do? Should they refuse? Uncle Sam is already trying to kick down the church's doors on providing abortion benefits to its employees. Who's to say they stop there?
If providing equal rights to same-sex marriages becomes THE LAW, how does that affect the church? See the pattern? The undercurrent? Are we having fun yet? I'm not trying to be an alarmist because I'm speculating what may and probably will happen in a few years should DOMA be overturned.
If you're not sure what will
happen, research same-sex marriages in Norway which has been a pioneer in the
LGBT movement. Research how their society, marriages, and churches have been
affected by the law of the land. Research the incidents in public schools in
San Francisco and Maine where transgender children are allowed in opposite-sex
restrooms. Research the Macy's employee who tried to prevent a cross-dressing
man from entering the female dressing room only to end up getting fired for it.
Lesbian celebrities (and straight ones for that matter) are getting
artificially inseminated. Homoesexuality has found its way into children's stories
in the classrooms. All this is what is termed "the undercurrent" of
the REAL agenda behind those shouting to be legitimized. Oh yes, there are
repercussions to our demands as a society and it will only increase as this
becomes "normal" everywhere. God is not mocked, man shall reap what
he sows.
I don't want to heap on a pile of data that involves nature, psychology, history and statistics to prove our point and there is plenty. That would take another column. But what's a Christian to do? How is a believer to respond to this issue? Many of us know gay people who we sincerely love but we don't agree with their lifestyles. I know Christians who struggle with homosexuality and I don't doubt their sincerity about their love for Christ. But what am I to do? Tell them to cave into the temptation because they were "born that way"? If so, then I would have to use the same standard with the brother who struggles to keep his hands to himself when he's dating a SISTER, the polygamist who also wants to be legitimized or the Christian who struggles with adulterous thoughts. Who am I to lower God's standard of right and true for the homosexual and speak a different truth to others with a different sexual disposition?
Jesus was clear about
this: "If
anyone causes one of these little ones-those who believe in me-to stumble, it
would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and
they were thrown into the sea" (Mark 9:42).
Condoning sin and supporting
a lifestyle of sin makes lost people more lost and they lose sight of the
saving grace of Jesus Christ.
I was torn about the Supreme court issue. Why? Because I believe LGBT people should have basic rights. I don't think Edith Windsor should have a federal estate tax assessed in the very state that sanctioned her lesbian marriage in the first place. I fight apathy because I know it's inevitable. This world is falling into full Anti-Christ mode and I know that's a trap into not praying for our country or being active where I can be. I believe us to be under a worldly system that has been increasingly anti-Christ for a loooong time. To me, the inevitable falling away means the inevitable return of Christ. Winning! But as Pastor Tony Evans would put it, I don't want to be so "heavenly minded" that I'm no "earthly use." Sigh...
I see two types of
Christians. The Christian who views himself as an Israelite in the Davidic
Kingdom imploring their nation to repent from her ways and pursue
righteousness. These Christians view America as their own Western Israel and
they are the most vocal about putting the 10 Commandments and prayer back in
our public school curriculum. They remind us every day about God's impending
wrath unless America repents. I agree with some of their views.
Then there are
Christians who have the view of an Israelite under Roman rule. "We'll
worry about us because there is no local revolt that is going to overthrow this
worldly government" so they shrug their shoulders and walk with the rest
of the Romans. They view the church as Israel and that's the only theocracy
they're concerned about. The American government is just the empire occupying
the land and they'll live more passively than peaceably with all men.
What was Jesus'
response?
I quote research professor and author D.A. Caron: "Jesus did not come to overthrow the Roman economic system. He came to free men and women from their sins... What His message does is transform people so they begin to love God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength and to love their neighbors as themselves....Naturally, that has an impact on society..."
The Prophet Daniel was second in charge of the Babylonian kingdom and he was a faithful servant to the rulers at that time. But when a decree went out to worship and bow to these rulers, Daniel, in faith, refused to bow despite what the law told him he had to do.
I've heard the
complaint of other Christians pointing out the hypocrisy of protest of other
brethren that are opposed to abolishing DOMA.
"Where's the outcry about divorce? Divorce destroys families. God "hates" divorce. Divorce is unbiblical," and to that, I agree completely. At first glance, it does seem hypocritical that many Christians are quick to protest on THIS type of marriage issue but not the one that has been a practice even in the church today without correction or rebuke.
But I have yet to
meet a bible-believing Christian that agrees that divorce is O.K. It's not.
It's a 50% rate problem that we should continue to keep our focus on praying
for and helping. But divorce is not the issue on the front burner now. Divorce
was the "Supreme Court" debate in the 50's when divorced people were
frowned upon and treated like lepers. And here's the kicker about divorce: IT'S NORMAL NOW. Get it? See the pattern? Are
we having fun yet?
Are we trying to control the moral behavior of people through government? No, but we have the same freedoms to vote and voice our views within the confines of scripture. We don't rely on the government to stop same-sex marriages. Jesus had the best remedy in influencing and changing lives: Love your neighbor as yourself and preach the gospel. As simple as meat and potatoes. Besides, our warfare is not flesh & blood or lobbyist & defense lawyers; but against the principalities and dark rulers of this world. The undercurrent behind all the front page noise. It's inevitable that every single domino falls to form this pre-planned picture. Our weapon is prayer. The agenda to normalize homosexuality by legally recognizing same-sex marriage is well on its way.
It's going to be interesting
to see what happens from here 'til June when the Justices MUST come to a
decision. Each domino is pointing to something that will be affected years
ahead with the same pattern that made abortion O.K. and divorce a
non-issue.
To be
honest, I'm not
concerned about same-sex marriage as much as I am concerned about the
undercurrent that lurks alongside the noise and its agenda is to bring the end
of freedom of speech and religion (mainly Christianity) so speak up when you
can and get involved when the country opens the door.
The self-proclaimed Zig Ziglar of rap, Billy Delgado, is a Music Producer/Artist and Writer by day and sleeping pillow-drooler by night. He is currently producing the debut album for his band The 288's, a God-inspired Hip Hop/R&B group that combines soul-baring lyricism with an electric innovative sound, breaking from the norm and reaching all cultures & ages (save senior citizens). He still can't believe he's a family man with a beautiful wife Mari & three boys Chris, Nelson and Joshua, so he continues to pinch himself silly to this day.
