All right. So I'm sitting in the movies next to my wonderful girlfriend a couple of weeks ago. We are watching trailer after trailer as we wait for the feature to begin. At first, all I can think about are the explosions and car chases (what ever happened to catching people's eyes with the flash of a good story?). All of a sudden, something strikes me: Every single masculine hero is idolized for their extreme independence. The thing that makes them attractive is their ability to survive completely alone against unbelievable odds.

When I set out to write about pornography for Newd Magazine I intended to contribute two pieces. The first was to be aimed at discussing the surge of pornographic images, stories and ideals that have burst into the public life of Americans. That piece, titled The Internet is for Porn, ran a few cycles back and, though tendentiously, did indeed accomplish its aim. I wanted the second piece to be a little more personal and a lot more subjective. The idea was to interview a couple of sisters in the Lord to gain a glimpse into how the effects of pornography in our culture trickle down into the individual hearts, minds and souls of some women.

Picture yourself driving to work, home, church and the gym using right turns only. Imagine mapping out a day's route or relying on a GPS system to stay right as much as possible. Sounds like a lot of work, huh?
This morning I watched a news clip about how UPS, or the United Parcel Service, trains drivers to avoid waiting in traffic lights by veering right at every opportunity. Even before there were computer programs or GPS systems, the world's largest package delivery company maintained personnel solely for mapping right-only expeditions.

I was an army brat as a child. I never really had a hometown. My family and I just threw ourselves into whatever city we moved to and called it home. One place I found particularly intriguing was Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our visits to the Sandia Mountains, local canyons and to the beautiful desert valleys always filled me with a strange kind of awe.
Some of the beauty of these landscapes lies in how unforgiving they are. When you stare out into the desert you are confronted by your own frailty. You are staring at a land that can swallow you up and devour you. Part of its beauty lies in its ability to remind us just how big the world really is and just how small we really are.
